Nitro designed a new brand identity for the municipality of Ilomantsi, which was also implemented into their online services. In Ilomantsi, everyone can live well, visit, work, and enjoy being part of an enterprising community in harmony with a unique natural environment. The new visual identity is rooted in the municipality’s strategy encapsulated in the guiding principle “For the joy of everyone” and is designed to reflect Karelian heritage, entrepreneurship, tourism, and nature. Part of Ilomantsi is Ilo, the finnish word for Joy, which is the basis of their values.

The renewed website is a central component of the rebranding effort, aimed at increasing awareness and building trust among various user groups. The design prioritizes user-friendliness and clarity, ensuring easy navigation for residents, entrepreneurs, and visitors alike. The website serves as a gateway to the municipality’s services and opportunities, aligning closely with the updated brand identity. The goal was to create a reliable, modern online service that reflects the municipality’s values and supports its role as a vibrant, attractive community.
The visual appearance of the website was meticulously designed to align with the new brand, with graphic brand elements guiding the design throughout the process. The user interface incorporated fresh colors, clear typography, and visual elements characteristic of the brand. Slightly rugged, bark-like brush elements were used to convey the municipality's values of closeness to nature, and these elements were employed diversely in the online service's illustrations. Additionally, the brand renewal's guiding principle, the promise "Bringing joy to everyone," is woven throughout the online service. The promise adapts to the content of each page—for example, in early childhood education, it appears as "Bringing joy to families with children," while on the Housing and Environment page, it is presented as "Bringing joy to residents."
The client had their own technical partner responsible for implementing the website on WordPress. Our role was to design the user interface and ensure that the visual elements transitioned seamlessly into the technical implementation. The technical partner provided specific requirements for the necessary elements and page templates, which guided the design process.
We worked closely with the technical partner to ensure compatibility between the design and implementation. In our design work, we adhered to WCAG AA-level accessibility standards, while the client’s partner ensured compliance with technical accessibility during implementation.
